The 5 Best Small Grow Tent Setups

Buying a quality grow tent is crucial. Don’t be fooled into poor quality grow tents that leak light or break down easily. See it as an investment that will save you time, money and headache. You will regret it if you spring for a cheaper grow tent to save a couple of bucks.

Grow tents are essential to growing hydroponic plants indoors. Not only do they prevent your strong grow lights from leaking light into your living spaces, but they also act as a safety barrier in case one of your water lines start to leak water. The inner lining of grow tents also maximize the efficacy of lights delivered to your plants. Keep reading in our guide below for even more benefits and ways to take advantage of your grow tents.

Unfortunately, not everyone has the money or the space to keep a huge grow tent in their house or apartment. This is where small grow tents shine. They allow you to have a professional setup without taking up too much space. They are great for professionals, amateurs, and novices.

The Best Small Grow Tent Setups

The top two options are our top recommendations for complete small grow tent setups. The bottom three options are the highest quality small grow tents. You will need to buy your grow light and grow vents separately (which we go into more detail below) if you choose these options.

Small grow tent setup

Best Fertilizers for Avocados

BloomGrow’s small grow tent kit comes with everything you need for a professional setup. If you want a grow tent kit and the size fits your needs, this is the one I would recommend springing for.

The tent itself is 32”x32”x63”. In my opinion, this is an ideal size. It is still small, but gives you the height you need for plants that grow taller or if you wanted to somehow make use of the vertical space you could add shelving for your plants that are germinating. When it comes to small grow tents, size is always going to be a limiting factor, and having the extra bit can make a big difference.

The tent itself is lined with a 96% highly reflective mylar. It has a large heavy duty zipper with double stitching that helps to prevent light leaks and also has a removable water-proof floor tray. In addition to the grow light, it comes with a hygrometer, rope hangers, shears, trellis netting, timer, and a ventilation kit. The ventilation kit includes an activated carbon filter with a life expectancy of about 1.5 years, an inline 189 CFM duct fan, and a 4” silver flex ducting.

The grow light that is included in this kit is a 600W UFO LED full spectrum grow light (which is usually priced at about $140). It utilizes new LED technology and has a very uniform dispersion of light under its UFO design. The light has a heat dissipation feature so additional fans are not needed for the light itself.

Vivosun’s small grow tent kit is the kit that I would recommend if you want to opt for the smallest size formate of 24”x24”x48”(please note, when you click over to the Amazon site, the product listing is for the 24”x24”x48” grow tent even though in one of the product descriptions it lists it as a 32”x32”x64” grow tent, which I think is a typo)

The Vivosun tent utilizes a reflective mylar that reflects 98% to help boost the output efficiency of your light. Vivosun’s tents have some of the best zippers on the market. They are sturdy, zip smoothly, and there are no light leaks. The tent is easy to set up and utilizes a thick canvas material. It has a removable and water-proof tray which makes cleaning a breeze.

Their kit comes with a 4-inch inline 203 CFM fan with a speed controller, 4-inch carbon filter and 8 feet of ducting to allow for a proper air filtration setup. It comes with rope hangers, trellis netting, hand pruners, hygrometer, a timer, and grow glasses.

The grow light that comes with the kit is a 300W LED light. The LED lights put off more than cheap LEDs, but it also generates more light output. It has a heatsink and fan to keep it cool. The full spectrum light includes lights of all wavelengths include infrared wavelengths.

This small Vivosun grow tent is the same one as the one mentioned above that comes with the entire kit. If you are someone that likes to customize and research/buy your own light or air filtration kit, then this is the route to go. Please see below for some of our recommendations.

Like I said above, these grow tent’s zippers are known to be high quality – they zip exceedingly smoothly and have no light leak. Vivosun as a company is also a larger company in the hydroponic space; this means that they respond to questions or concerns faster and have good customer support. Even though their grow tents are slightly more expensive than other brands, you are purchasing a quality small grow tent with a solid build.

Topolite’s small grow tent is great for the value and is our top value pick. It is a 24”x24”x48” grow tent with heavy duty oxford cloth material. It hast sturdy plastic connectors for the corners and utilizes heavy duty zippers that have a lightproof backing. It is easy to put together and has a removable floor tray. For the price, it is difficult to beat this grow tent. That is why this grow tent gets our top budget pick for a small grow tent.

If you are in a real bind for space and need a small grow tent that might be able to fit on top of or under a desk, this would be the one to buy. If you have any capability to get a bigger grow tent (such as the ones above), then I would strongly recommend considering to do so. With grow tents this small, you will be very limited in what you can grow. That being said, if you live in a cramped studio, then this tent might be just what you need to grow hydroponics without letting the light leak all over your apartment.

Yield Lab’s small grow tent is not cheap. At ~85 dollars, you can buy more grow tent space for less. But the truth is, there aren’t many grow tents with these dimensions so they are able to charge more. The tent itself utilizes reflective mylar to increase your light efficiency. It has a dual sided exhaust vent port that can be fitted with duct fans to help circulate air and there are also pest-proof vents at the bottom to allow fresh air. There is a small Velcro viewing window on the side of the tent and a flood tray at the bottom of the grow tent as well. It is extremely easy to set up. In my opinion, a small tent like this would be great for starter trays or clones.

Small Grow Tent Buying Guide

A small grow tent is very useful to give your hydroponic (or non-hydroponic) plants a place to grow while maximizing your light output, minimizing light leak to the rest of your home, and also dealing with some of the smells associated with plants. They also provide a spot to catch water to prevent water damage to your floors in case anything leaks.

Considerations When Setting Up a Grow Tent

Growing hydroponically (or with soil) indoors with a grow tent requires a lot of planning and setup. Even though it is very detailed work, it is quite enjoyable as you figure out the details for your particular grow necessities. By planning well, you will minimize the risk of running into issues and also having to do countless upgrades in the future.

Of course, the first thing you will want to consider is the size. You likely found this site because you are looking for a small grow tent. Nonetheless, you still want to consider the size that would be suitable for your needs. Think about what plants, reservoirs, and grow lights you want to put into your grow tent. Use a pencil and paper and visually draw it out to make sure it will all fit into the grow tent that you are considering. If you are looking at the smallest of grow tents so you can set the grow tent either on top of or under a table, then make sure you realize that you can only grow very limited plants or set up germination trays in those tents. Depending on what you are planning on growing, you might also want to consider leaving space for humidifiers – more on this below.

Once you have ensured enough space within your grow tent, make sure that you also would have enough space wherever you plan on putting your grow tent in your house. You may also want to consider where you are placing your grow tent – if you will be utilizing a ventilating system, you will want to make sure there is enough space around the grow tent if the ventilation system will be on the outside of the tent. It also might be wise to put the exhaust near a window so that the air can be vented outside of the house if necessary.

Which leads us to our next consideration – grow tent ventilation.

Ventilation is important

Ventilation is important to the growth of a healthy plant. If you are buying one of the recommended grow kits, then you have nothing to worry about. However, if you are buying your grow tent separately, I highly recommend that you look into making sure your grow tent has proper ventilation.

Proper ventilation helps to clean the air, remove odors, and also helps to provide airflow to minimize concerns with heat. By circulating air within the tent, you will also help strengthen your plant.

When you are trying to create airflow, you can go about doing this by either using a passive or active approach.

A passive approach uses an inline exhaust fan to take air out of your tent. This creates a vacuum which will allow a draft of fresh air to come in from the intake vents at the bottom of your tent. This negative pressure technique is frequently used in many situations including the cooling of computer cases. It is suitable for most growers, particularly those with small grow tents.

In an active approach, you use an additional fan to push air into your tent. This kind of approach is only needed if you have a very large tent and will almost never be used in small grow tents.

Please see our separate ventilation system page for further details on a proper ventilation system. For all of these tents above a 50 CFM fan will work if you are not using a carbon filter and a 60 CFM fan will work if you are using a carbon filter.

You can set up your filter and fan to either be inside or outside of your grow tent. Because space is a commodity in small grow tents, you might want to create a setup where the fan and filter are on the outside of the grow tent.

Other Features to Consider

One of the most important features that I look for is a good zipper with minimal to no light leak. As you are aware, grow lights are very intense and light leak can nullify a lot the benefits of having a grow tent.

Also look at how many window vents and ducts the grow tent has.

Ways to Take Advantage of Your Grow Tent

There are many great benefits of having a grow tent. Let’s take a look at a couple of things you may not have considered that may improve your growth.

Humidity within the Tent

Having a small grow space allows you the opportunity to control the humidity within the grow space. For plants that benefit from high humidity consider purchasing a humidifier to boost your plants’ health and growth.

UV Light to Boost Flavor or Aromas of Your plants

You’ve probably been trained to think that ultraviolet (UV) light is to be feared, and for good reason. But, in safe doses, UV can actually be beneficial to plants. Think about it this way, in small doses, UV will give you a tan without actually damaging the skin. The same is true for plants.

UV is a mild stressor for plants. In response, your plants will produce natural oils as a form of protection that will smell and taste great. This is true for things like herbs as well as cannabis where UV will cause the plant to produce more trichome that results in higher THC and CBD levels.

Grow tents allow you to use a UV lighting in a safe environment. If you need to enter or open your grow tent, you simply shut off the UV light. Don’t let this big benefit of grow tents go to waste!

You can learn more about UV lights here.

Carbon Filter for Odor Control

If the plants that you are growing is particularly smelly or aromatic (ahem), then using a carbon filter can help significantly reduce the odor that is put out of the tent. As I mentioned earlier on this page, you will want to think about your grow tent set up – probably with a passive ventilating approach.

Bottom Line

If you’re looking for a small grow tent kit, I recommend the BloomGrow Kit. If you are looking for a standalone small grow tent, then consider either Vivosun’s grow tent or Yield Labs’ very small form factor grow tent. These grow tents are the best value. Do not buy other grow tents that may have cheap construction.
