Gardening. Who would’ve thought that such a simple thing could change your life? WILL change your life.

There is nothing better than working getting fresh air outside in the sun. Digging with your hands. Planting, feeding, watering, and watching a plant grow from seed. Your hard work grows in the background of your normal life.(1,2,3)

Each day, you check the results of your labor. Oftentimes, the results are barely noticeable. But other days, the growth occurs so quickly that you can barely believe it has only been one day.

As you watch life mysteriously grow in front of your eyes, you feel one with nature. You feel at one with the world. You feel…at one. Whole. Complete.

Gardening requires patience and teaches you to slow down. You begin to notice the birds that make nests in your trees. Or the bees near your flowers. Or the squirrels chasing up and down your neighbors trees. You see life flourish. You see life perish. And you see new life that results from the perished.

Our current society has lost touch with its roots – nature. We have been tricked into believing that the secret to happiness is wealth, technology, and social media. We sit in front of screens all day and order packages to be delivered to us instead of being amongst the forest, the water, the sun, and life. Humans have traditionally lived in community with one another and with nature. But in the past few decades, the joys of living in community has slowly been lost.

Gardening. Yes, it’s the secret to happiness. Try it out and you will see.
