Don’t you wish you could have the pleasure if eating a delicious, nutritious avocado that you grew by yourself? Growing an avocado tree is a fun hobby that results in a tasty reward. With proper care, growing one is not difficult.
Avocado trees are tropical plants and they do not tolerate cold very well. Their tree limbs are easily susceptible to damage from wind. As such make sure to grow it in a warm and sunny climate OR give it the proper conditions to grow if you are in a cooler climate.
Planting Your Tree to Maximize Sun and Warmth
Make sure to plant your tree in a place where it receives at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day to maximize fruiting (if possible aim for 8 hours of direct sun light). If you are in a cooler climate, you can consider planting in a pot near a wall that receives plenty of light. The point of planting it near the wall is to let some of the heat from the sun radiate onto the tree to keep it warm. As for the pot, you may need to consider bringing it in during winter months if you live in a colder climates. Bring in the tree once temperatures drop below 50 degrees (if you do this, it would be prudent to supplement with a grow light).
Well-Draining Soil
Make sure to plant your avocado tree in soil that drains well. Their roots need good airflow to minimize the risk of root disease. Always let the soil and/or container dry out before deep watering so that the entire root zone is moist. Unfortunately, they have shallow roots, which make them prone to water stress as the top soil tends to dry much faster than deeper soil. Mature trees need water equal to about 2 inches of rain fall each week during the summer. Younger trees will need watering at least 2-3 times per week. If you live in a hot climate, which will dry out the soil fast, you may need to water even more frequently than that.
Ideal N-P-K Ratio
Avocado trees flourish with fertilizers that are often used for citrus trees. Aim for an N-P-K ratio of about 2-1-1 is ideal. They need plenty of nitrogen to flourish. For this reason, also try to keep your tree away from lawn, if possible, as the competition for nutrients may leave it tree with deficiencies.
You will want to fertilize roughly 3 times in the first year (in the spring, summer, and fall). In late fall, the tree will become dormant and you should not fertilize for a fourth time. Make sure not to over fertilize because this can be just as harmful.
Bottom Line
